What do you love?

What do you love?
Enter a topic and possibilities open up. I tried some recent school research topics: American Bison, The U.S. Constitution, Malawi, and realized this would be a good springboard for a student team investigating a topic.

The American Family Through Time

As the American family has changed, so has the actual census. For instance, a total of 5 questions were asked in the 1790 Census as opposed to 42 questions in the population section of the 1950 Census.
The timeline below gives you access to all these incredible insights. Simply click on each decade in order to understand what has changed and what has stayed the same. Each decade has a link to a list of its respective questions. Click on the buildings for some quick comparisons between 1880 and 2000. Use the "Fun Census Fact!" cards to further your census knowledge.
Most of all have fun learning about what life might have been like for your ancestors and uncover The American Family Through Time!

Historypin | Home

Historypin is a way for millions of people to come together, from across different generations, cultures and places, to share small glimpses of the past and to build up the huge story of human history.
Everyone has history to share: whether its sitting in yellowed albums in the attic, collected in piles of crackly tapes, conserved in the 1000s of archives all over the world or passed down in memories and old stories.
Each of these pieces of history finds a home on Historypin, where everyone has the chance to see it, add to it, learn from it, debate it and use it to build up a more complete understanding of the world.

Sweet Search

SweetSearch helps students find outstanding information, faster. It enables them to determine the most relevant results from a list of credible resources, and makes it much easier for them to find primary sources. They exclude not only the spam sites that many students could spot, but also the marginal sites that read well and authoritatively, but lack academic or journalistic rigor. As importantly, the very best Web sites that appear on the first page of SweetSearch results are often buried on other search engines.

It searches only the 35,000 Web sites that the staff of research experts and librarians and teachers have evaluated and approved when creating the content onfindingDulcinea. They constantly evaluate search results and "fine-tune" them, by increasing the ranking of Web sites from organizations such as the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, PBS and university Web sites.

Peregrine falcon recovery

First Egg of the Season Laid Just Days Ago
The non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. Their first birdcam went online in 1998 and 'Mae's Internest', the internet's first birdcam, quickly became the busiest corporate site in the world.Students watched the eagle family as they built a nest, laid eggs, struggled with bad weather and other animals, and cared for their young, who grew from downy babies to juvenile predators on the wing. It was an amazing experience. By giving ordinary people intimate access to the lives of wild animals, their work deepens the connection between people and the natural world, bringing benefits to both. Working with an eagle biologist, they trapped young female eagle 'D1' shortly after she started flying and attached a satellite transmitter to her. This transmitter allows viewers to follow her journey now that she has left the nest. The travels of D1 can be viewed at www.raptorresource.org or on facebook.
